Nuclear ships
Sir, — Your informative, balanced article, on life in Hawaii, with nuclear bombs and naval vessels, last Saturday, was timely and cuts most of the anti-nuclear emotionalism, to pieces. For years, Hawaii has lived with a nuclear base and no danger or harm has come to anyone. When one hears the New Zealand critics you would think we will all die, within minutes. What twaddle. One trendy went as far as to say that if an American nuclear naval vessel visited New Zealand “he would be, frankly, scared as hell.” Well, lor all these poor little frightened souls, who don’t appear to be, able to face nuclear ships, I for one, am not the slightest concerned, and if allowed, would visit and look over a nuclear vessel, as I am sure many thousands would do. If they demonstrated against 600 road deaths a year their extremism would make sense. —Yours, etc., C. G. MARSHALL. August 23, 1976.
