N.Z. golfer wins $4000
PA Wellington Barry Vivian, the unattached Hastings golf professional, picked up the biggest pay cheque of his career yesterday when he won the $lO,OOO centennial pro-am in Pago Pago, American Samoa.
His $4OOO first prize has boosted his earnings on the South Pacific, circuit to $6200 from three wins, a third and a fourth in five tournaments.
Although carrying $lO,OOO in prize money, the Pago Pago event was played over only 36 holes, with Vivian
winning by just one stroke after carding a six-under 64 in the final round on top of 68 in the first.
Two weeks ago Vivian picked up $B5O when he won the Fiji Open and also headed the money list in a pro-am pipe-opener just before it.
He then finished fourth ini the Pacific Harbour Open, four shots behind the winner and earning $4OO. Then came the Samoan Open where he finished third two strokes behind the winner, picking up $4OO. Vivian will now spend a few days in Suva before returning to New Zealand to prepare for the $1 million Australian and New Zealand series in December. He will miss some of the later New Zealand tournaments in December when he flies to America to represent New Zealand in the World Cup,
