The police said the trouble began when a group of about 25 youths attacked the Lurgan golf club, breaking all the windows, before moving to the army' post in Church Street which they stoned. Later a crowd of about 80 tried to burn the gates of the railway crossing in Leech Street. “They did not succeed but the gates were damaged.” the spokesman said.

As a result early-morning trains were cancelled until thv gates were repaired. A milk churn containing 1001 b of explosive was neutr"lised by an army bomb disposal expert on Saturday night after it had been discovered covered by stones at Forkhill. Trouble also flared at Lo .- donderry, where a group of youths set fire to a barricade on the Creggan Estate before stoning the William Street army checkpoint.
