Troup named for tour side
Gary Troup of Auckland has been chosen to replace Dayle Hadlee in the New Zealand cricket team which will play in Pakistan and India later this year. He will celebrate his twenty-fourth birthday in the opening days of the tour. The chairman of the New Zealand Board of Control (Mr W. A. Hadlee) announced Troup’s selection on Saturday, and confirmed that Geoffrey Howarth of Northern Districts and Surrey, would be the replacement for Brian McKechnie, who is injured. Troup’s selection is a minor surprise. A left-arm fast-medium bowler, he has had only eight first-class games for Auckland and has met with very modest success. A more likely choice seemed to have been Ewen Chatfield, of Wellington, who already has a test match appearance to his credit and whose performances for his province have been convincing. However, Troup is a very strong young man, who may be better fitted for the rigours of this tour than Chatfield. Last season Troup played three matches for Auckland, taking only seven wickets at 35.4 runs each. That made his total 20, at 38.7. He bowled with some sucecss in South Africa with D. H. Robins’s team. A useful, hard-hitting batsman late in the order, Troup scored 58 not out, in 69 minutes, on his debut, against Central Districts, in 1974-75. Howarth, a stylish batsman, a part-time off-spin bowler, and a brilliant fieldsman, has had a very successful career at home. He has had two very good seasons for Surrey and in recent weeks has been scoring heavily for the county. I
