Council to hear Ward report
A special committee on f.ye electoral ward system will make recommendations to the Christchurch City Council on Monday. Details of the report, presented to council officers on Tuesday, cannot be published until the council meeting.
But the committee chairman (Mr E. A. Lee, S.M.), Sir Terence McCombs, and Mr H. P. Smith, are expected to make comments on each area the council wanted studied. They were asked to con-
aider whether ward boundaries were suitable, in the light of 1976 census figures and other factors; whether the 19-councillor body is an adequate size; whether some councillors should be elected “at large,” outside the ward system, and whether wards should reflect similar occupational and social interests.
Public hearings on the ward system, set up before the 1974 local body election, were held early this winter. There were 14 submissions from individuals and groups.
