KITE FLYING A WARNING TO PARENTS AND CHILDREN I DURING EACH KITE FLYING SEASON, staff of this Department spend much time removing kites which have become entangled in the overhead electric wires. As many as 23 have been removed in a single day. Whilst the cost to the Department for this work is high our principal concern is for the safety of the children whose kites contact the overhead wires. A moist kite string in contact with a 230-volt line can have very . serious results for a person holding the string. It should be remembered that f this Department also owns more than 150 miles of lines operating at 11.000 volts and 66,000 volts, from which lines the danger is many times greater With the risk so real the Department urges parents, teachers and others in charge of children to alert their charges to the dangers which the children , may not see for themselves. v Do not fly kites where they may become entangled in overhead wires !■ Abandon any kite, should it become entangled, and please inform the Department, telephone 61-819, Ext. 857. A timely warning can prevent a tragedy. MUNICIPAL ELECTRICITY DEPARTMENT, CHRISTCHURCH. II . 2974 i
