Ulter’s agony
Sir, — As long as British policy towards the civil strife in the six counties of Ulster persists in the misguided view that the problem can be resolved without reference to the claims of the Republic of Ireland to its sovereign right of dominion over all Irish territory, including the alienated six counties of Ulster, the problem will continue to defy resolution. This myopic British view is well exemplified in John Cole’s article,
“I.R.A. still terrorising Ulster,” in “The Press” when he writes, "If such a withdrawal (British military) took place, it would be made against the democraticallyexpressed wishes of the majority of Northern Ireland.” The disposal of any part of Irish territory by a colony of alien settlers, a minor'ty in the total population of Ireland, whose right of tenure rests solely on British arms, is a proposition to which the Irish people will never agree. — Yours, etc., M. CREEL. August 5, 1976.
