World sport
Sir, —If anyone has helped Mr Muldoon ruin New Zealand’s image overseas it is Mr Lance Cross, not H.A.R.T. or C.A.R.E. What an attitude this man has to actually infer on television that, if the Africans and Chinese form their own games, they will be in the “little league” and will want to come back. If these nations go ahead with their games, and it is foreseeable that other powerful nations will join them, they will more likely be the “big league,” both in numbersand in sporting ability. Statements like this, made here and overseas without any hint of real regret that what has happened is New Zealand’s fault, cannot go unnoticed. It makes one wonder what Lord Killanin, Mr Cross, and others would do if 26 white countries were threatening to boycott the games if one African country participated. — Yours, etc.,
R. J. FRAME. August 5, 1976.
