Check to Avon Loop plan
Avon Loop neighbourhood renewal plans will have to be done piecemeal. The Housing Corporation has informed die Avon Loop Protection Association that it cannot directly finance a community housing trust working towards renewal. It must deal through local authorities. Recently the Christchurch City Council decided that it ■■hould concentrate on limted renewal schemes that iarf a chance of being finmced, rather than proceed vith comprehensive renewal 'roposals for entire neighborhoods. But town-planning committee members said they did not want to discourage
I the Avon Loop Protection Asi sociation moves. Thev suggested a special residential i zone for the area, which » could control redevelopment t according to a master plan. i Then it would be possible : to start “mini-reclamation” t developments within the ■ neighbourhood according to an over-all concept. ’ Avon Loop residents are [ firm in wanting to respect ' neighbourhood wishes. They 1 want to keep out stereotyped ' flat developments, and pre- * serve cottages which lend 1 character to the area. Some ' homes could be improved: others could be removed to , allow room for higher- ; density living.
