Ski cups to Canterbury
PA Invercargill The 1976 Coronet Cup skiing champions are Fiona Johnson, of Canterbury, and Stuart Blakely, from Methven.
Miss Johnson retained her title, after having won it last year, with some very good ski-ing this week-end. She was second on Saturday in the slalom, to her fellow team member, Anna Archibald, although recording the fastest time in her second run. In the giant slalom she came in second also.
Janell Mills, of Queenstown, who won, was unplaced in the combined, being disqualified in the slalom for having straddled a gate.
The runner-up silver tray was awarded to another Canterbury skier, Julia Allison, who was fourth in the slalom and second in the giant slalom. Third overall was Miss Archibald, who due to a fall
on the lower quarter of the course, managed only sixth placing in the giant slalom Stuart Blakely, the new Coronet Cup men's champion, was second in both the slalom and giant slalom to Peter Caprez. As a Swiss national, Caprez was unable to take the title. His tussle with Blakely, a member of the New Zealand Olympic team, was intense. In the giant slalom, the latter was 0.39 of a second ahead, but on the second run this was reversed, with Caprez winning the event by 0.63 of a second The second New Zealander overall was Robin Armstrong, from Hawera, also a member of the New Zealand Olympic team, and third was Jeremy Light of Canterbury. Perhaps the most disappointed co ntestant was Julian Morris of Canterbury, the third New Zealander in the giant slalom, he was disqualified in the slalom after a very fast run.
