Cricket placings simplified
There should be less jockeying for position in this season’s Sheell cricket series than there was last season. The New Zealand Cricket Council's board of control at the week-end made changes aimed at such maneuvering, and also tried to encourage the use of slow bowlers. The first two teams in the Shell Cup competition — the round-robin part of the firstclass season — will now go directly into the semi-finals. The third-placed team will now play the fifth, and the fourth play the sixth. When those games have reached a result, a draw will then be made by the manager of the sponsoring company. However, the top two teams will not be drawn to play each other.
The Shell series, the knockout portion, will still carry performance points, but as last year, each first innings will be restricted to 75 overs, except the final (85). Bowling performance points will be the same as for last season: one point for each two wickets taken, but th">re has been a change in batting points. Now there will be one point for the first 100 runs, and one for each 50 thereafter. Last year, it was for each 25 runs.
