More withdrawals from cricket team
The much-weakened New Zealand cricket team to tour India and Pakistan has been further depleted. Dayle Hadlee yesterday withdrew from the side for family — not financial — reasons, and Brian McKecbnie is to be replaced on fitness grounds. Hadlee’s availability was in doubt on financial grounds, but the New Zealand Cricket Council’s board of control yesterday emphasised his withdrawal was for family reasons: he has three children under the age of four.
McKechnie, who was chosen just before the team was released to replace Bevan Congdon, has an injured finger, the result of playing rugby. “After considering a medi- , cal report and a report from the selectors, it was decided McKechnie should be replaced,” said the board chairman, Mr W. A. Hadlee. Congdon, before the announcement of the team, and Ken Wadsworth, after, withdrew from the side, and Brian Hastings (retired from test cricket) and Hedley Howarth (unavailable) were
other current test players not able to tour. The task of replacing the two players will not be easy unless Congdon can be persuaded to reconsider his decision.
