Govt policy attacked
NZPA Wellington The Government’s sports policy has been strongly criticised by the Labour Party spokesman on sport, Mr E. E. Isbey (Grey Lynn).
“We are now witnessing the great political somersault by the Minister of Foreign Affairs (Mr Taiboys) in regard to sports contacts with South Africa,” Mr Isbey said.
He was commenting on a report that Mr Tayboys had said in Canberra that New Zealand sports bodies might in future be less likely to send competitors to South Africa.
“The double-talk policy of the National Government on sports contacts with South Africa is exposed when Mr Taiboys makes different comments overseas from those he makes in New Zealand for domestic consumption,” Mr Isbey said. “He, as Minister of Foreign Affairs, knows full well that because of the policies of the National Government, our international reputation is at its lowest ebb, and now he is attempting to make amends by making repentant statements outside New Zealand, but not here.”
