Mairehau A comes out on top

Mairehau A had a few worryinging moments in the first half of their match with Mairehau B as the latter took charge to lead with a half-time score of 18-12, in the womens A grade basketball in Cowles Stadium on Saturday. Mairehau B played an admirable game with fast movements and much improved goal shooting. The schoolgirl team has been practising hard to defend their national schoolgirl title in Invercargill on August 26. Their efforts were obvious as they, held a marginal lead throughout the first spell. However, after half-time the experienced A team leapt into action, taking rebounds and shooting with the utmost accuracy. „ Mary Fastier took the initiative for Mairehau A and scored well. Her score was 15, with Andrea Tavlor and K. Adamson working hard for 14 points each. The prominent scorer for the B team was Robyn North, with 16 points.

Big lead Checkers romped away to a big win of 70-29 against Rebels. The vast experience of Checkers left Rebels far behind but not without a little determination which saw good results. Chris Chaplin (Checkers) was in top form and shot well, making the most of her height. Sharon Rennet! positioned herself well throughout the game snd scored 16 points.

Half-time score was 27-9 to Checkers.

Shirley Le Warne gave a promising performance for Rebels, intercepting whenever Checkers left an opening. Her score was 10. Well matched University and Rangiora were well matched as they approached a half-time score of 26-23 in favour of University. Jan Harley played a remarkable game for University, executing shots exceptionally well, and scoring 22 points. Sandra Kearney (Rangiora) curbed a number of University’s balls, playing with alertness and scoring 18 points. The second spell saw University widening the margin to win 52-43. Results:—
