Courthouse bombing admitted
PA Dunedin To show the courts and the police that he was not to be ‘‘mucked about with or taken lightly,” an 18-year-old youth, Philip John Sutherland, broke into his former employer’s premises, stole some gelignite, and made a bomb, which he detonated outside the Balclutha courthouse on July 24. He pleaded guilty in the Dunedin Magistrate’s Court yesterday before Mr J. D. Murray, S.M., to charges of wilfully damaging the courthouse, and breaking and entering the premises of Fulton Hogan, Ltd. Sutherland admitted being responsible for the explosion, and also said he was going to throw gelignite into the police station, but did not in case there were people inside. He was convicted and remanded in custody until August 12 for a probation report and sentence.
