Philosophy before engineering

Sir, — Above an article by Prince Philip in “The Press” on Saturday, it is asserted that more students at British universities are studying philosophy than production engineering. Given that many students, particularly in the Scottish universities, study philosophy as one of their subjects for an arts degree, and' that production engineering is but one aspect of engineering, this fact is not at all surprising. To say, however, that “no single fact about Britain goes as far to explain the country’s poor industrial performance” is to make a very surnrising and highly dubious claim. There are I suspect, many more students of soeiologv (or history. or English literature, and so on) than of philosophy at British universities. Does this fact go even further to

explain Britain's poor industrial performance? — Yours, etc., R. H. STOOTHOFF. July 31, 1976.
