Funds refused for sprinklers
The University Grants Committee has declined for the second time to pay $24,000 for the installation of a fire-sprinkler system in the wooden Okeover Homestead, occupied by the Canterbury University School of Fine Arts. The University Council was told on Tuesday that the replacement value of the 7000 sq. ft building was $250,000. Its vulnerability to fire threatened life, the library, and valuable equipment, said the Vice-Chancellor (Professor N. C. Phillips). It appeared a third application for funds would go the way of the first two. It seemed the sprinkler system would have to be paid for from university reserve accounts. Mr D. B. Rich said the committee’s refusal was an “extraordinary piece of economic short-sightedness.” The Ministry of Works has recommended the installation of the system, but the .'ommittee has pleaded lack jf funds. The homestead sur vived a fire in one of its.
rooms last year which caused $70,000 of damage.
The council referred the matter to the executive committee.
