Public speaking contest

A pupil from Xavier College was the winner of the Canterbury branch of the Royal Overseas League’s public speaking contest in Christchurch on Monday evening. David Small, whose topic was “Can Democracy Survive?”, will go to Wellington for the national finals. Belinda Fahey, of St Margaret’s College, and Alison Cree, of Mairehau College, were placed second equal. The judges were Canon Bob Lowe and Mr Brian Harman.
