Man fined for art forgery

PA Auckland A man who changed details and signatures on several paintings to increase their value was fined $5OO by Mr Justice Henry yesterday. Alan Taylor, aged 43, a free-lance journalist, had been found guilty of three charges of false pretences and three of attempted false pretences.

Taylor, the Court had heard, bought early New Zealand paintings and signed the signatures of such artists as C. F. Goldie and Charles

Blomfield to them. He then sold or attempted to sell the works as originals by these artists. His counsel, Mr A. G. Deobhakta, said Taylor was a man of intelligence who realised how close he had come to a prison sentence. Taylor had published a book, the profits of which had gone to the Maori Education Fund, and a second book was due to be published. As the proceeds would take some time to come in, paintings owned by Taylor could be sold to cover any fine.
