Former chairman of county dies

A former Ashburton County chairman. Mr Eldred Treleaven Grigg, has died aged 83. Mr Grigg joined the Ashburton County Council in November, 1950, and served on it until 1968, spending one term from 1956 till 1958 as chairman. He was also chairman of the Ashburton Hospital Board from 1959 till 1961. and served as a board member for a total of 24 years, from 1944 till 1968. Mr Grigg was also well known in other organisations in the county. He spent 12 years as chairman of the Alford Forest School Committee, and three years during the Second World War as president of the Methven Agricultural and Pastoral Association. A Gallipoli veteran, he served on the Production Council and a patriotic committee during the Second World War.

Mr Grigg was a member of the Masonic Lodge. Rorn at Brookside, he came to Alford Forest with his father in 1908 and the family has farmed there since. On his return from the First World War he took control of the farm, and at his death was in partnership with his son. Ashburton County Council and Ashburton Hospital Board members stood in silence at their recent meetings, as a mark of respect to Mr Grigg. The county chairman (Mr S. J. Letham) said Mr Grigg had given a lot of time and energy to local body and public body work over many years, and was held in high regard by those he had dealt with during his service. He is survived by three sons and a daughter.
