African aid $740,000
PA Wellington Thousands of dollars are spent by New Zealanders on tours of South Africa, while in the year ended March 31 the amount spent by the Government on all aid projects in Africa was $740,000, says the chairman of the Overseas Development Committee (Dr Patricia Burns). More than $4 million is being spent by New Zealanders travelling to South Africa to watch rugby, Dr Burns says.
“The suggestion that African States should be grateful to New Zealand for money spent on overseas aid 'is foolish when it is realised that this year New Zealanders are spending more money in South Africa than in all the other countries of the African continent.”
