McKee Trust award for architect

An architect, Mrs Barbara Collingwood, has become the first Lincoln College student to receive a McKee Trust award. The award will enable Mrs . Collingwood to study for a post-graduate diploma in horticultural science. Mrs Collingwood trained as an architect at the University of Sydney and since her graduation in 1966 has had wide experience in communitv planning, relating particularly to public participation. She spent three years with the Centre for Environmental Structure in Berkley, California, studying urban-design problems and the relationships between human behaviour and the design of buildings. In 1971 she went to England and spent some time as a gardener at one of the colleges of Oxford University. She was also employed as a consultant to the” Open University, doing some summer-school teaching and a ,

considerable amount of research. Towards the end of her four-year stay in Britain she worked with localgovernment bodies in Sheffield. During her year at Lincoln College Mrs Collingwood will make a close study of plants and the ways they adjust to different envoronments. She hopes to apply the results of her study to her architectural work. She is concerned about how little say people have in the planning of their living and working environments. “The buildings that people live and work in must reflect the temperament and spirit of the people themselves, but they have had very little say in their design and form,” she said. McKee Trust scholarships are awarded in memory of a Nelson family prominent in mineral exploration and development. Up to three are aw’arded each year, one in geology and two in horticulture.
