Top-priced Hereford hull fetches $9000
Special correspondent Palmerston North South Island breeders were to the fore at the national Hereford sale. It was not a free sale, and about half the bulls catalogued failed to sell. Twenty-three bulls from an offering of 50 were sold at an average price of 52640. The top price was $9OOO, for an unplaced bull at the pre-sale show sent forward by the Westholm stud, from West Otago and purchased by a partnership of the Beechwood stud (Culverden) and the Papatahi stud IFeatherston). The next best price was 56000, given by P. Coombs (Ashhurst) for a bull from A. S. O’Neill (Raetihi). The champion bull, offered by F. and the Estate R. Humphreys 'Gisborne l went to Leov Bros. 'Blenheim) at 85700. The second placed bull from the same vendor went to E. Cranston (Wanganui! at $3750. Mr J. C. Lambeth (Dargavllle) gave S4lOO for a bull from J. F. G. Blakely and Son (Walkari, North Canterbury) which was third in the show. The Karamu Land Co. (Wanganui) sold a bull at $4600 to Awataha stud (Hastings). Nine female cattle met with
a much better demand to sell at an $825 average, with four lots beating $lOOO. The champion heifer, shown by D. C. Davies (Hastings), went to R. McDougall (Raetihi) at $l2OO. Other sales of South Island interest were:— Bulls from C. W. Lee 'Blenheim, to S. R. Murphy 'Gisborne at $2050 and to D. Dimock (Gisborne) at $1000; one from K. and R. Price (New Plymouth) to lan Ford t Sefton) at $1500; one from L. .Allen iSeddon) to G. J. McMillan (Hastings, at S 900: one from H. E. Williams (Blenheim; to E. Shepherd (Tuakau) at 53700
