Conference with theme of efficiency

The first national conference of the New Zealand Federation of Master Cleaners opens at the Town Hall today with a theme of “greater efficiency.” Some 35 of the 150 delegates attending come from Australia and one of the principal speakers is from the United States. According to Mr R. J. Mellish, chairman of the conference, the federation sponsored the conference and its associated trade exhibition because of a belief in the need for greater efficiency in the industry. “We believe that everyone in the industry or associated with it should

have the opportunity of gaining all the knowledge we can make available on how best to achieve greater efficiency,” said Mr Mellish. “We have obtained some of the most highly qualified people in specialised fields to speak on selected topics and all the topics

will be covered in a way which enables all businesses, large or small, to gain a benefit,” he said. A number of workshops will be held after major speeches to enable group discussion on the issues and methods raised. Among the speakers are Mr A. L. Andersen of the Fuller Corporation in the United States, whose topic will be the use of correct materials and modern machinery: Mr H. Armstrong, an industrial psychologist from Australia who will talk on manpower planning; Mr J. R. S. Higham, the deputy director of the Business Development Centre at the University of Otago, on better management; and Mr A. F. Crothall, a past president of the New Zealand Employers’ Federation, on good industrial relations. Other speakers will cover marketing and accounting and there will also be one from the Commission for the Environment. Associated with the conference is a trade exhibition which will be open to the public, in the Limes Room at the Town Hall.
