Shearing dispute

PA Wellington Representatives from the Workers’ Union and the Sheep Owners’ Industrial Union of Employers will meet in Wellington next Wednesday to discuss matters affecting the shearing industry. The Minister of Labour (Mr Gordon) said on Tuesday the parties had agreed to’ this procedure in place of a committee of inquiry, recommended to the Government after a meeting of Canterbury farmer representatives and representatives of the Workers’ Union and shearers in Christchurch on July 5. “Because the matters referred to me came within the sphere of a dispute of interest, for which there are existing procedures in the Industrial Relations Act, I could not see my way clear to set up a committee of inquiry and advised the parties accordingly,” Mr Gordon said.

“However, I am pleased that the parties have now agreed to meet at a national level at the earliest opportunity- and I have appointed Mr W. Grills, industrial mediator, to act as chairman.

“I am hopeful that all outstanding issues will now be resolved,” said Mr Gordon.
