Wharf bill contested

PA Wellington The Employers’ Federation yesterday strongly criticised proposed legislation which it fears would extend coverage of the waterfront industry to oth.tr industries and commercial interests beyond the waterfront.

The federation, in presenting submissions to Parliament’s Labour Bills Select Committee, said the Waterfront Industry Bill could widen the scope of waterside work to bind other groups at. present governed by the Industrial Relations Act.

The Waterfront Industry Bill was introduced by the Labour Government last year and although the National Party has said it will allow the bill to proceed it is expected to amend the legislation. The federation said water-! siders' higher rates of pay! and concessions should not! be permitted to spread toi workers in industries outside! the wharf gates, and that! the present waterfront limits should not be extended. The secretary of the Store- 1 men and Packers’ Union (Mr P -Mansor) said his union strongly objected to the proposed new legislation and claimed that it would allow the large waterfront and transport unions total control of New Zealand’s export industry and transport system.
