Finn wins motor tour
NZPA-Reuter Birmingham. Ari Vatanen, a 24-year-old Finnish driver from the tiny village of Oensuu, has won the motoring Tour of Britain.
New Zealander Denny Hulme, a former world driving champion, finished 12th in Opel Commodor — an impressive performance considering that he had never driven in a rally before. Vatanen, driving a Ford Escort R.S., finished the three-day event, which Combined rally driving and racing stages, with 11,044 penalty points to win from Britain’s Brian Culcheth, in a Triumph Dolomite Sprint, who had 11,096 penalties. Another British driver, Will Sparrow, was third in a Vauxhall Magnum with 11,442 points.
