DEFENSIVE BLUNDERS
PA Oamaru Two defensive blunders in the first half cost the North Otago rugby team 10 points at Oamaru on Tuesday as it suffered its fifth consecutive loss of the season, 12-20, against Thames Valiev. Thames Valley led ’l3-6 at half-time. Of two “gift” tries to Thames Valley, the first was scored from its first excursion into North Otago territory—a clearing kick by Richard May, the North Otago half-back, failed to find touch, and the ball landed in the arms of the wing, David Strange. He burst 25m through a sketchy tackle by May, to score in the corner. Just on half-time, with Thames Valley ahead 7-6, the North Otago left wing Graham Johnston dropped a high ball from Don McMillan. Pita Cherrington swooped in to pick up the loose ball and send Strange over under the posts. Scorers:
Thames Valley: David Strange (2), Brian Swindail, tries; Kerry Maloney, a conversion and two penalty goals. North Otago: Tony Devereux and Richard May tries; Devereux, two conversions.
