Big fire in office building

PA Wellington A spectacular fire badly damaged an office building in Jervois Quay last night after 40 firemen tried unsuccessfully to confine the flames to the upper floor. Initially, the firemen were unable to find the source of the fire. They had used breathing apparatus to probe the smoke-filled top floor above the flooring specialists, M. B. Stephens and Son, Ltd.

Thick smoke was seen coming from top-floor windows and seeping under the roof for about 30 minutes before hundreds of spectators on the quay saw the first flames. Minutes later, flames burst through the roof, forcing-firemen to pull back the ladders they had hoped to use to get at the seat of the fire. The single hose on the snorkel was all that could be used to hold the fire. The Chief Fire Officer, Mr R. H. Mills, who had six appliances and the emergency tender as well as the snorkel at the scene, also called in a turntable ladder from Lower Hutt.
