Landslides bury 5000

NZPA-Reuter Jakarta More than 5000 villagers were buried by landslides triggered by an earthquake 11 days ago in the remote Indonesian province of Irian Jaya on the island of New Guinea, the Indonesian director-general of the Interior Department (Colonel Suwondo) said yesterday. The slides covered 28,800 hectares and buried parts of 10 villages. The area, which has a population of about 16,000, is one of thick jungle and hills and is difficult to reach. It was not known if any of those buried by the slides had been rescued. But the Colonel said 349 people were reported to have been killed when the earthquake occurred on June 26, with a magnitude of 7.2 on the Richter scale. Aftershocks were felt in the stricken areas for more than a week, until last Sunday.
