A MEDAL FOR A WALK

One of the most popular annual events in Marlborough, held in early January at the height of the holiday season, is the Marlborough Walk. Each year hundreds of people make the 27 km walk from Blenheim to Picton, often in blistering temperatures. Children as young as four years have made the walk, as well as a number of people in their eighties. At 6 a.m. on Walk Day, usually January 2, the walkers set out on their journey. There is no element of competition involved, but people completing the walk for the first time receive a specially struck medal.

Each successive walk earns a bar to the medal. The walk is organised each year by the Marlborough Public Relations Organisation. Participants can take as long as they like with the journey, and as long as they complete it in 12 hours, they are entitled to a medal or bar.
