More use of schools urged

Better use could be made out of school hours of school facilities and grounds, the Mayor of Christchurch (Mr H. G. Hay) told the annual conference of the southern region of the Secondary School Boards’ Association in Christchurch yesterday. Land, sports facilities, and pools were becoming a scarce resource. As public property, school grounds and buildings should be made to benefit the community to the maximum, Mr Hay said, as it could not afford the costly duplication of facilities. School authorities should be interested in co-operating in social surveys of suburbs, he said. “I feel sure that there is considerable scope for secondary pupils and teachers to run after-school, or holiday activities,” Mr Hay said. “Benefits to pupils could be extremely worth while."

Local bodies were also obliged to make maximum use of recreation reserves.
