Burglars sought liquor

Two men smashed the plate-glass window of a Ferry Road shop on Friday morning to get "hard” liquor, Mr P. L. Molineaux, S.M., was :told in the Magistrate’s Court yesterday. 1 Before the Court were j Thomas David McComb, aged 24, unemployed, and Peter [Robert East, aged 21, unemployed, who both pleaded [guilty to a charge of burgling the premises of R. Pow’ev and Company, Ltd. They were convicted and remanded in custody to Friday for sentence. Sergeant J. C. Rowe said that after breaking the window the defendants climbed into the shop and put liquor and cigarettes into a pack. However, the police arrived before they could leave and they were found hiding inside. The two men, who had been wearing socks over their hands, told the police they had been after "hard liquor.” Gary Reginald Baker, aged 19, a process w’orker, who altered a wages cheque from 596 to $196. pleaded guilty ito a charge of forgery. He was convicted and remanded on bail to April 27 for sentence. Sergeant Rowe said that Baker had admitted altering the 'cheque, saying that he had been out of work and had needed the money. Compensation of $lOO was sought as the cheque had been cashed.
