Men rescued from rocks on beach

(N.Z. Press Association) AUCKLAND. Two men were rescued after spending more than 24 hours in a makeshift camp on the rocks of South Bethells Beach, on the west coast of Auckland. John Mountain and John Shilton, both of Mount Eden, set out on a tramp around the coast from Muriwai to Kare Kare on Friday. They were climbing down a cliff face towards South Bethells when Mr Mountain slipped on crumbling rocks and injured his knee. Unable to climb back up the cliff, and with the incoming tide making it impossible to walk around the bottom, they retreated to safety above the water line and made camp. Both are experienced trampers and spending an uncomfortable night on the rocks presented little difficulties. “In the morning we started signalling with the heliograph and lit a fire to try to attract the attention of the people on the beach,” Mr Shilton said. The smoke from the fire was seen by the lifeguard on Bethells Beach at 2 p.m. A surf boat rescued them soon after.
