Sure aim at Riccarton
When the conversation amongst a group of Christchurch golfers turned one day to the subject of racing someone suggested they try their luck as owners.
The syndicate of four chose wisely — by leasing, with the right of purchase, the two-year-old Lady Lucifer, the brilliant winner of the Canterbury Jockey Club’s Champagne Stakes yesterday. Now it is almost certain the partners, Dr D. M. Mcllroy, and Messrs J. Columbus, A. G., and A. N. Bailey, will exercise their right of purchase of the filly from the Trelawney Stud at Cambridge. Lady Lucifer is prepared
at Riccarton by the veteran George Humphries and was ridden by lan Grant. A member of the Fireside family, developed so successfully by the late David Porter Wilson, Lady Lucifer came into racing in spectacular fashion by winning the Canterbury Jockey Club’s Irewell Handicap at odds of over 80 to one last November. Her summer programme was affected by an injury which demanded minor surgery, but her victory yesterday supplied handsome compensation. Grant brought Lady Lucifer on a steady run towards the middle of the track. She put the favourite, Steel Heart, in behind her in a few strides near the 200 metres and sped away to win by, two lengths from the Otaki-trained Byron Street, which outfinished Like Magic. Steel Heart was a fading sixth. Although he got to the front briefly in the straight, he never gave Bill Skelton a great surge of confidence. He was behind the bit just before he passed Colada, El Towk, and Bell Flight to reach the lead near 600 metres. Colada, the second favourite, drifted out to ninth and Bell Flight was a disappointing tenth.
