Hornby tipped for league win
The “new-look” I lornby league team will be seen on the Show Grounds for the first time this season when it meets Woolston under floodlights tomorrow evening.
Hornby, a strong favourite to complete the qualifying round with an unbeaten record, has already convincingly disposed of Riccarton and Baisweil on suburban playing fields, and will have the services of its three internationals, Wayne Robertson, Bob Jarvis. anti Murray Wright.
It was generally expected that Woolston, which also spent the summer months scouting for talent, would be Hornby’s most earnest challenger in the' preliminary series. But, although it beat Marist - Western Suburbs
comfortably enough, it surprisingly lost to Riccarton in its other game. The only notable absentee from the Hornby line-up will be the Kiwi trialist forward Wayne Bunn, who will make his Canterbury debut against Brisbane Eastern Suburbs at Brisbane tomorrow night. However, Hornby should still win with something in hand. The late inclusion of the Marist - Western Suburbs centre, Michael O’Donnell, in the Canterbury side — Marist’s captain-coach, Mocky Brereton was an original selection — has led to his club’s match with Halswell being postponed until Saturday. It has been replaced by a senior third division fixture between Hornby and University-United.
