Pay claim of 20 p.c.

(N.Z. Press Association) WELLINGTON, April 18. Take-home pay packets of little more than $69 a week for married men and $66 for single men covered by the general drivers’ award, are behind a decision of the Drivers’ Federation to claim increases of more than 20 per cent in pending wage negotiations. The general secretary of the federation (Mr Stewart McCaffley) said more than 80 per cent of drivers covered by the national award had gross weekly earnings substantially (up to onefifth) lower than the accepted average wage for the country of $lO5 a week. “It is easy from a pinnacle of $28,000 a year to say the workers must tighten their belts. These men have no notches left on their belts,” Mr McCaffley said. Wage. claims for the new award have been served on employer groups by the federation. Conciliation will begin ou May 17.
