Softball protest charges fail
(N.Z. Press Association) AUCKLAND. Two more charges arising from demonstrations against the South African softball team in February were dismissed in the Papakura Magistrate’s Court. Tho -as. Oliver Newnham. the President of C.A.R.E., and Ross Mathew Forbes, an 18-year 1 student, were acquitted of obstructing a constable in the execution of his duty on Monday, February 16.
Six cases have so far been dismissed and two have led to convictions. Nineteen cases are still to be heard. Newnham and Forbes were arrested after they refused j retire behind the barrier c ected by the police on the corner of Green Street and Quc-n Street, P a p a k u ra.
