Kart battle ruined by engine blow-up
The expected battle between Chris Lambden (Christchurch) and John Hamilton (Christchurch) in the 100 cu. cm rotary light class at the 1976 Marlboro NewZealand sprint kart championships at the week-end did not eventuate.
Hamilton started well with a first and second, the same as Lambden, but in the third heat his motor blew up and he lost all chance of the title. Maxine Holland (Christchurch) the only woman competitor in the class of 20 karts, finished a creditable seventh. Competition in the class was fierce and it took 20 minutes to get the first race started after some stem talking by the national stew-
ard, Mr O. Mildon. Drivers were approaching the start too fast and two crashes on the start line resulted. After 14 years of competition, Doug Drake (Christchurch) won his first national title in the 150 cu. cm class with three wins and two seconds. Eric Haddock (Auckland) won the 100 cu. cm class easily with five wins in five events. He won most of the heats by the length of the straight. Hamilton won the 100 cu. cm open title from Ray Mart (Palmerston North) on a countback on points. The third place was also decided on a countback. Jim Rouse winning it from Lambden. Peter Allpress (Christchurch) won the 250 cu. cm class in spite of having to drive with an arm in plaster. He received some stem on-
position from Graham Harris (Auckland). Results were: 250 cu. cm class IV (motorcycle engines).—P. Allpress (Chch) 1, G. Harrison <Auck.) 2, W.
