New lake record
Doug Cameron, of Nelson, in Miss Print, broke the five-year-old Lake Kanieri speed record at the Easter powerboat regatta held in perfect conditions on Saturday and Sunday. Cameron set a new record of 119 m.p.h.. seven m.p.h. faster than Peter Knight’s old record. There was some spectacular racing yesterday with four boats flipping over. None of the drivers were injured. Results were:— Race 1. —Poodle (Lake Kanierl) 1, Kapai (Lake Kanieri) 2, Unicorn (Lake Kanieri) 3. Race 4.—Mortitian (Lake Kanieri)) 1, Living (New Brighton) 2, Scorpion 3. Race 5 (South Island 650 cu. cm restricted outboards).— Glasscraft Tunnel (New Brighton) 1, Hyflyer (Lake Kanieri) 2, Chrysler Tunnel 3. Race 6. —Miss Print 1, Pacemaker (Rotoiti) 2, Tamatha (Rotoiti) 3. Race 7 (850 cu. cm restricted outboard hydro).—J-K-Loo 1, Mr Mouse (New Brighton) 2, Gold Cat 3.
