Jakarta cuts Timor force
(N Z.P.A -Reuter—Copyright) JAKARTA, April 18. Three hundred Indonesian troops have been withdrawn from East Timor because peace has been restored there, according to the Indonesian Foreign Minister (Mr Adam Malik). He said yesterday that the world should understand that the Portuguese colony was now controlled entirely by the pro-Indonesian Provisional Government of East Timor. The Jakarta Government had said that the troops, officially described in Jakarta as volunteers, had been sent to East Timor at the request of the Provisional Government. Mr Malik did not say whether there were any more Indonesian volunteers in East Timor.
The leader of the Provisional Government (Mr Arnaldo Dos Reis Araujo) has accused Portugal of backing
the terrorist campaign of the Left-wing Fretilin independence movement in East Timor. He said the United Nations should accept the fact that his Government was fully supported by the people who wanted to integrate the territory with Indonesia. Mr Araujo declared that the process of decolonisation ended with Portugal’s departure from East Timor.
