Audaciter schooled over hurdles
The Riccarton jockey, Phillip Smith, schooled the talented galloper Audaciter over hurdles at Riccarton yesterday before leaving for Riverton where he will ride Windvale Boy and No Decision today.
Smith will be back at Riccarton on Monday and will be attempting a fifth successive victory on Audaciter, the second top weight and, on his record, one of the stronger chances in the George Adams Handicap. The Riccarton light-weight horseman, Murray McPhie, has been engaged to ride the
Gore-trained Game Warrior in the Great Easter Handicap on Monday. Tatawai Princess and Cam may be the only other runners for the Cochrane stable at Riccarton on Monday. Ellery Jane and Scale Free, both failures at Rangiora last Monday, have been sent home, and Bonny Alouise, an acceptor for the George Adams Handicap on Monday, may be reserved for the second day of the meeting. The North Island jockey, Gary Phillips, will ride Carn, which will be racing in the colours of her trainer in the Warstep Stakes on Monday. Cam has promising placed form in the south to bring her in for attention in Mon-
day’s 1600 m race for the females.
The Wairarapa Racing Club has made what has almost become an annual appeal — for race riders from Riccarton to ride on the opening day of its Easter meeting today; and Paul Thistoll, Brian Hibberd, and Brent Lee have answered the call. They will return at the week-end to be at Riccarton for the start of the Canterbury Jockey Club’s autumn meeting. The 15-year-old Lee, one of the most promising newcomers to the ranks of race riders, has been engaged for Sir Troubadour in the George Adams Handicap and Jipcho has been engaged in the Great Easter.
