Paparua District Scheme
Sir, —Congratulations to “The Press’’ on its coverage of the Paparua County proposals. I question the reason for the council’s proposed changes as it has been proved that most owners of 20 acres or less farm them more intensively than owners of larger holdings. Indeed, with rates being so high, maximum productivity is essential. As an environmentalist, I would like to see closer subdivision on the slopes of the Port Hills. Only this way could they be replanted with attractive trees, and the unsightly gorse replaced by more beautiful flora. The owners of a smaller holding could afford to beautify it far more easily than the owner of a larger area, while still keeping it in full production, as has been proved frequently. In a democratic society, those who wish to build on, and beautify, twenty acres or less, of rural land should be allowed to do so. — Yours, tK " M. MORROW. April 12, 1976.
