Oats yield well
A high yielding crop of Taiko oats was grown in the Willowbridge area of South Canterbury this season by Mr A. C. Ruddenklau.
Mr Ruddenklau was reticent about discussing the yield this week, as the oats are held in bulk, so as is frequently the case these days it is hard to put a precise figure on crop yields. His guarded estimate is 135 bushels to the acre for the 12-acre crop, but the yield could be higher than that.
This was the first time that he had grown Taikos. Three bushels of seed to the acre, with 1 cwt of reverted superphosphate, was sown in June on a paddock that had previously been in barley. The soil was good Willowbridge silt loam, but running out into light
country for about a quarter to a half acre of the area. Quite a bit of the crop went down in a storm on Christmas Day. Mr Ruddenklau 'has grown Black Supremes previously and has had yields of up to 112 bushels to the acre. He says his wheat this season would have averaged more than 80 bushels.
