12 lose jobs; no redundancy
Twelve men will bt without employment, and with no redundancy agreement, when C.M.W. Industries, Ltd, closes down on April 30, because of lack of profit ability.
The company is the only one in the South Island manufacturing horticultural spraying equipment. It was registered in 1910 and has long been owned by the Holland family. The late Sir Sidney Holland and his brother were early shareholders. Mr E. S. F. Holland, member of Parliament for Riccarton. is the present chairman of directors, the other directors being Messrs G. W. Holland and J. H. Brixton. Besides supplying part of
8 the New Zealand market. tfie f company has also exported irrigation equipment to Asia and the Pacific. • The manager of the com--8 pany (Mr R. S. Challis) said - last evening that it had been . in difficulty for the last* two years, and the directors had decided to cease trading. Workers at the factory had been advised oh March 31 that it would close, and ware given three weeks notice yesterday. Mr Challis said that the staff would find it very difficult to get jobs elsewhere. Most were in their 50s and had been with the company for many years. Mr Challis said that tie workers were “a good n-y ’ and had continued to worlcto maximum production even after they had been told they would lose their jobs.
