St John promotions

Several local persons have received promotions in the Order of St John. These have been conferred by the head of the order, the Queen, and announced by the GovernorGeneral (Sir Denis Blundell). Messrs J. Begg and C. J. J. Morkane, both of Christchurch, have become commanders, Messrs G. J. Armstrong, of Christchurch, and A. J. Egglesome of Rangiora, officers, and Mr R, B. Watson of Queenstown was admitted to the order as an officer.

Rugby death.—Mr Charles Herbert (Herb) Smith, one of Otago and New Zealand’s great mid-field rugby backs in the 19305, died in Dunedin on Saturday. Mr Smith played 27 games for Otago between 1931 and 1936 and was captain of the team which in 1935 won the Ranfurly Shield from Canterbury.
