Irish police call in firearms
Zealand Press Association —Copyright) DUBLIN, April 13. The police in the Irish Republic have ordered all registered firearms—estimated to number about 120,000 —to be handed in for examination.
The announcement coincided with another hold-up, in which gunmen escaped with about $56,000 in cash and cheques from an armoured car near Dublin. Twelve days ago, armed bandits took more than $400,000 from a mail train. The police have notified all registered gun-owners to turn in their weapons bytoday week. The guns will be tested, and records made of serial numbers, ballistics,
firing-pin markings, and other data of use to detectives. It is expected that the surrendered guns. mostly shotguns and 22-calibre sporting rifles, will be returned to their owners, although four years ago. when the Government ordered handguns and large-bore rifles to be surrendered in the interest, of public safety, about 1500 were handed in, and they have not been re- ' turned.
