Interests of solo parents urged

Any moves to strengthen the family unit would require recognition of the needs of one-parent families, said the member of Parliament for Avon (Mrs M. D. Batchelor). Mrs Batchelor was commenting on an article in “The Press” on Saturday in which the Minister of Social Welfare (Mr Walker) said that a Cabinet committee on family affairs would include in legislation measures to strengthen family life. Mr Walker should ■ define what he meant by family life, Mrs Batchelor said. Such a definition would alleviate the worry of many solo parents. “Unless Mr Walker recognises that today's family unit differs from that of other years, he will be attempting a backward step,” she said. Without such understanding, the committee's efforts would be of no use to many of today’s families.
