‘Mercenary training in Tasmania’
(N.Z. Press Assn—Copyright) MELBOURNE, April 12. A Tasmanian Labour member of the Australian Senate, Senator Justin O’Byrne, has called for a Federal Government inquiry into reports that mercenaries for Rhodesia are being trained on a farm near Hobart.
Senator O'Byrne said today: “The reports follow an advertisment in the ‘Hobart Mercury' on Saturday. “I have heard reports that 12 mercenaries have already been flown to Rhodesia. I have no sympathy for mercenaries — they drag the reputation of a nation down into the mud. “The advertisement had creepy undertones.” The advertisement read: “Required.— Fit men for tough, exciting adventurejobs overseas. Age 18-30. Must be single or have had past bush or military service. All expenses paid. Good pay and top conditions for right men. . Apply with basic details to T. Bright, Hobart 34.14.81.” Senator O’Byrne said: “I will be getting in touch with the State and Federal Attor-neys-General and the Minister of Foreign Affairs. Tasmania can take action on its own. The State AttorneyGeneral (Mr Brian Miller) has power to take criminal proceedings against anyone taking part in unauthorised rifle drill or parades.”
