Inquiry on ferry urged

The Rangatira question should be thoroughly investigated by an independent body before the ship is taken out of service, according to the Lyttelton Harbour Board. The board yesterday passed a resolution asking the Government to set up an investigative body to examine the implications of the Rangatira’s withdrawal. July 21 is the tentative ■ date given by the Government for the Rangatira’s withdrawal through the Minister of Transport (Mr McLachlan) has indicated that she will not be taken off till a “suitable alternative” has been found.

The question of an independent inquiry was raised at yesterday’s board meeting by Mr R. H. Bedford, who said the board had to know whether it was justified in supporting the pro-Rangatira lobby. If it did not do this, the Rangatira’s withdrawal would be a purely political decision, and Canterbury might suffer for years. The board member for Lyttelton (Mr L. W. Laing) described the effects of the Rangatira’s withdrawal as “extremely complex" — affecting all the South Island and a significant part of the North Island. “The Rangatira’s s2.Bm loss could be nothing compared with the cost to the country of its withdrawal.”
